The interior features the original craftsman woodwork, pocket doors fireplace tile and quarter-sawn oak flooring. The house has been owned by two families in the past 99 years and has never been on the market. The first owners were Robert E. and Charlotte Lewis Hicks, who moved to San Diego from Denver with their children, James and Elizabeth. Hicks was a newspaperman in Denver who came to San Diego to help promote the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. It is believed that the lumber used to build the house may have come from buildings in Balboa Park that were torn down following the Exposition. Hicks had a deep and abiding interest interest in theater; in San Diego, he opened and operated the Plaza, Cabrillo and Balboa Theaters and also staged Buffalo Bill's farewell tour.
